How Photography has Changed since the Arrival of Smart Phones

Back in the day when photographers were the photographers

Photography has Changed – before the advent of personal cellphones, photography was a fairly mysterious profession. If you wanted photographs, you had your own camera with the prerequisite roll of film and you pressed the shutter and prayed, or in more special circumstances, you hired a professional  photographer.

Smart phone owners are ALL professional photographers

Nowadays everyone is a pro with their Smartphones set on auto camera or their point and shoot cameras finding in most cases, the perfect exposure. All that these wonderful devices don’t do, is compose the frame and perhaps that feature is on its way.

So how else has photography changed? If you hire a professional photographer to cover your event, they have to jostle along with the rest of the crowd, to get you to look in their direction. By the time you do, your smile is tired and your eyes are drooping. If there’s more than one of you being photographed, the rest of the subjects are looking around in all directions.

Then before you know it, the photos taken by your friends and relatives have been uploaded to Facebook and when your beautifully framed, edited photographs arrive from the photographer, they enter the race as an “also ran”. Everyone has already “seen” your wedding pics and have moved on to the next event.

The Pros and Cons

It’s absolutely wonderful that people who could not afford a camera or a photographer, are now able to document their lives in a way that they never could before. In South Africa, the only photo that many people had of their deceased parents was the ID photo in their identity books. That said there need to be social rules for situations where a professional photographer is hired to cover an event. Imagine if the MC had to fight to be heard over the guests with their own microphones and their own agendas?

What’s to be done?

One of the reasons I think that guests want their own photos, is that then they know they have them, whereas the photos a pro photographer takes, are often only seen by a select few.

Perhaps at the beginning of the event there needs to be an announcement asking guests to give way to the photographer and to not obstruct them working. Next there has to be a confirmed site that guests can go to to download the “official” photographs for free. The guests can then concentrate on taking photos of their friends and family at times when the photographer is otherwise occupied. The guests will feel assured that they will have access to the professional images and the photographer will not arrive home feeling as though they have been in a bun fight!

Corporate event photography, social mediaphotography, photographing award ceremonies

Corporate Events and Award Ceremony Photography in Johannesburg – The Popai Awards

Corporate Events and Award Ceremony Photography

The Popai Awards are a sparkling corporate event and annual award ceremony requiring photography each year. They are the showcase of the bold and the best in the the Point of Purchase Advertising industry. The contenders are young, beautiful and full of energy and enthusiasm -a wonderful heady mix of flashy clothes and bold and beautiful youth. Held this year at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel in Sandton, the event was an evening to remember. The comedian and  MC  Dave Levinsohn, kept everyone amused and entertained with his quick banter and off the cuff comments. I was there to photograph the event and the award ceremony.

Corporate Event Photographs -the How-to

Nobody likes seeing their photograph with someone else’s name as caption! With corporate event photography it is essential to make sure the correct names are ascribed to the correct photos and also that they are correctly spelled. Snap quizz -how many ways are there to spell Stuart? Another important aspect of event photography is to avoid people’s backs to camera, people eating or generally not looking their best. Take lots of pics and then you can delete, delete, delete.

Birthday Photography Johannesburg

Birthday Photography Johannesburg

Kushatha wanted a photography shoot with her friends to celebrate her 30th birthday in Johannesburg – and she wanted them photographed against iconic Johannesburg sites. So there we all were on a Sunday on Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein, no doubt causing a distraction to the bleary eyed church goers driving across the bridge. Despite their high heels, the ladies managed to climb up parts of the bridge and still look glamorous. Then we headed off to Melrose Arch, lots of outfit changing, clothes swapping, accessory matching, lots of laughter and lipstick and finally all done with each person getting the equivalent of a mini model portfolio, plus photos together with their best friends.

Physical fitness photography

Physical fitness photography.

Nowadays more and more people are working on improving their physical fitness and once they can see good results, they want to document their improvement with good photographs. Some people need photos of their bods because they are entering physical fitness competitions, while others may just have started in on their New Years resolutions to tone up and slim down.

Professional Physical Fitness photography

These photos are not something you can do as a selfie or something a friend can do for you if you want the best results.

You need proper  professional photographic lighting from the most advantageous angles ie lighting from the side and or from above to show texture. In the case of physical fitness photos, shadows are as important as highlights as they show definition. That’s all very well for the body, but that type of lighting can be a little harsh on the face. So the ultimate formula is soft lighting on the face and harder top or side lighting on the body.

Additional suggestions: Distraction free background, baby oil smoothed evenly on the body, with a mixture of glycerine and water spritzed on top of the oil. It’s also great to make use of the services of a make-up artiste and of course a full body tan is essential.

Photographing Wildlife

Mabalingwe 2013 (30)Photographing wildlife is similar in some ways to photographing children. You either need to be really close to them or you need a long enough lens to bring them really close to you! Animals seen from a distance are not interesting unless you are photographing an extremely large herd.

Again, like children, you have to appear friendly and non threatening, have lots of patience and time, and realize that it’s all about them – you cannot reason with them, beg them, or in the case of animals, bribe them.
Animals with young are dangerous. Don’t do anything that may scare them and if you see a young animal on its own, be aware that the parent is probably nearby. Don’t get between a baby and it’s parent and don’t get between a hippo and a waterhole. Hippos kill more people than any other wild animal although you would never think that to look at them.
